I am the parent of a disabled son. He is retarded, autistic, and has had seizures every day for the last 24 years.
He can not be left alone. He can not eat, take his meds, bathe, dress, or use bath room with out help. He is 26 and has been disabled since he was 2 after getting DPT shots. I came to AZ for weather/health related reasons for both of us. I had been tring to get care for him for 8 months. I could not leave him home and go to work. WE had many Dr. appts. I had to prove to the state of AZ he was disabled before he could get any services from DDD. I had extensive medical records going back years. Despite being disabled myself and limited to the kind of work I can do...I applied for and got, 19 jobs but was unable to go. Simple math... Over several months and too many details for here.... I ran out of money, we were going to be homeless.
I contacted shelters all over the state of AZ and we were turned down.
WHY??? Because my Disabled child is considered to be a Man even though he functions as a 2yr old child. We are not considered to be a family. If I was pregnant, or had children under 18, or had an abusive mate I/We could be in a shelter. I have never been so terrifed in my life. My credit is bad now and I will loose all our things. There was a time, when I asked for help, none of this had to happen.
State & Federal dollars working for discrimination... Why should you care? It could happen to YOU or someone you know.
