There is someone who responded to my online ad and said he would like to buy my car. It seems that he is overseas. I happened to read the scam warning. I have been dealing with this guy for two weeks now and he has not given me any information on his location. He said he would send an American check so that is what makes me assume he is not in the country and when I ask where he is from he never indicates. I was wondering if someone has any advice for this situation. Thanks.

This is one of the most common scams on the internet right now. Most likely, he will send a fraudelent cashier's check for more than what you're asking, and request that you wire the difference back to him.
If you forward his first couple emails to abuse@backpage.com, we can compare them to other emails we've received and confirm whether or not this is a scam.

I have received 3 emails from 3 different people in regards to my ad and I know they're scammers because two mentioned "cheques" and one had a french by line.
In order to protect your self from scammers, you should use the "anonymous email" feature for any ad. This will reduce 95% of the scam responses. If you use your email address in the ad, you almost always get international scammers trying to get you to accept a bogus cashiers in exchange for you wiring them money.
Please see the scam ad link on any Buy-sell-trade pages for more info.
You can also forward scam responses to abuse@backpage.com. We use that info to disrupt the scammers activities.

Also, you may want to forward those suspicious e-mails to uce@ftc.org, which is federal. But certainly, deal with it on the municipal/local level first. Most (large or small) will deal with the issue immediately and in most cases satisfactorily.
