First offered for sale in 1981 for MSRP of $299. 1MHZ processor, 3.5 K available memory. You used your TV for a monitor, though I think there was an optional, (and expensive), color monitor. I had a cassette tape drive for mine which was the nearest thing to a hard drive available at that time. I also had a modem which ran at a blazing speed of 800 Baud. Once connected to one of the very few public websites around back then, charactors would appear on the monitor at the rate of about 1 per second. They DID have some pretty cool games which came in Atari - like cartridges and plugged into a slot on the back of the computer. I "upgraded" to the C64 when it came out. C64 had slightly less than 64K of available memory.

GOD, Now I had a Friend that used to Run his Own BBS on one of those and I use to connect to it all the time, He had like 5 Floppies and like 2 Tape Drives hooked up to it, I thought it was the Coolest thing in the WORLD! At the time I had a Tandy 2000 (I think) Then BBS's started Fading out of the World Because it was Being Replaced by the Internet....Gosh only seems like yesterday...

Remember GT BBS? I used to run a GT BBS on one of the very early Tandys, (cannot remember exactly which one now), but it did not have a hard drive and everything worked off of two 3.25 floppies. You had to set your modem to "auto answer" and people could dial directly into your system to access the BBS. It was mainly uploading and downloading small games and programs. We have come a long ways from that.

I had a 300 baud modem and convinced my friend who had an apple IIC to buy one so we could talk...

There I was, 12 years old calling him with my C-64/300 baud modem looking like a moron wondering why it wouldn't work.

Man, If I was just born 10 years later.

Now I am the owner of a multi million dollar software company. But I could have retired at 25 if I had the tools these kids have when I was young.

my school bought these to teach BASIC and it was the most rediculous keyboard ever invented. as if you used one finger to type and you had to press rather hard as i remember. terrible.

the atari 400 keyboards where very very bad and yes you had to pound them to get them to work was a good computer though I remember spending hours programming that thing.
