We have a new puppy. He is progressing well with his potty training at 10 weeks but occassionally pees in his kennel. We only kennel him at night and have his kennel open for him throughout the day. He will hide in there and hoarde his toys. He has peed in there twice in the last two days when we were out of kennel and playing. Each time I just change out the towel on the floor. He is not peeing in there because he is locked in there. We don't close his kennel ever but will close the bathroom door at night so he has his own bedroom. He has not peed in his kennel at night.
-Is this normal?
-What can we do to fix this?
-we have found the best way for Beasley is to take him out to pee right after his naps. Are there other suggestions?
-He doesn't seem to be peeing in there out of spite. I think he is seeing this as good dog behavior.
-He is 3 days into his potty training. We got him from a pet store where he peed ad lib on shredded paper in his kennel (this might be the issue, here...)
-He is a bright Boston Terrier who is learning to socialize
-We do not hit or harshly scold Beasley ever and have been trying to firmly potty train him. I know that this is still early in his training but I want to nix the peeing in Kennel ASAP.
Thanks for any insight. His kennel is approx. 2x-3X his size.

With proper care and insistance in training, I'm sure he'll out grow this habit. Please be patient.

Your sooo kind pladecalvo!!
Puppies will have accidents just like kids will. It will take a little bit of training before he gets it down pat. But he will learn it and even then some dogs will still have some accidents if no one happens to be around to take them out when they need to go. Most dogs will wait as long as possible for someone to get to them before they have their accident... how long they can wait just depends on the size of dog and how big their bladders are.

IT is also possible that the puppy won't. We have a Black Lab and we had him in a kennel since he was small. We could not get him to stop peeing in his kennel when we were gone. We tried treats, a radio , TV . . . it would work for a while then he'd start peeing again. Finally we just leave him in the kitchen & living room. Now he doesn't pee in the house. . . .

Once he gets into the routine, he will get the hang of it. Sounds like your doing a good job with him. :)

All you have to remember is that if you apply Pavlov's behavioristic approach you can't fail. All desirable behaviors will be rewarded and all undesirable behaviors will get punished.

Yes, but you have to "reward" and "punish" in the correct manner. Always reward immediately (no longer than 3 seconds) after the correct behavior is performed.
I'm not really sure what you mean by punish, though -- the most punishing I do is a firm (not yelling, just a firm tone) "Eh" (because that's the sound dogs use when they are younger when they communicate to another dog that they don't like something), and that's not really a punishment at all, that's a correction.
Almost all training (certified) methods used today are associated with "positive training".

Good for you! NO PUNISHMENT EVER! If one learns to properly communicate with their dog - as you obviously understand how to do - happy, intelligent understanding is created and the dog will want to do what you desire it to do.

You would do better with a puppy pen instead of a crate, which is like a little prison where your dog can't move around.
If you take the puppy pad with the poop stain on it and bring it outside, let your pup smell it and give the same command in the same tone of voice (I use "make a poopie" in a musical tone that I use to reward with hugs and petting), your dog will get the hint soon enough. After the poopie occurs, give a small treat and make a big deal about the outside poop. Your dog will catch on very quickly and look forward to pooping outside. As the outside pooping behavior becomes more regular, alternate the treats from food to hugs and making a big deal - this will wean him off of looking for treats every time he poops. Then, maintain the habit of saying, "Good boy, you made a poopie!' throughout his lifetime. It doesn't have to be a big deal as he gets older because he will understand the words. And if you want him to poop - like when it's raining outside - your command of "Make a poopie!" is already ingrained and will work quite well.
Good luck and give your pup some kisses for me!

His kennel is too big, it should be only big enough for him to laydown in. We had a big kennel for my boxer mixed (nick named poopers) and he would pee and poop, until I learned to downsize the kennel. We did it by putting an empty tote upside down. He learned, but over all keep up with it.
PLEASE continue to crate train, so many people get rid of thier dogs or get angry because the animal is left alone in a home. Then they end up chewing on stuff, etc. After all they are animals still. Puppies don't completely potty train until as late as six months but remember his kennel is his place, NEVER punish him there. It is his safe place, even if he did a bad thing. If you punish him him there they have found out that dogs will associatte it as a bad place.
When ever training in order to really understand dogs, think like a dog pack, you will begin to understand everything your dog does and why. My dogs are trained in both english, german and silent commands. I have never used a clicker but use positive rewards. They can be left in stay postion for over a block before they get impatient or are released by my command. My only problem is they LOVE kids, and go crazy when they see babies.
