Emergencies in your Pet Bird

Discussed will be common household dangers and environmental injuries and how to keep your bird safe in your home. The second section will describe the cause and treatment of other avian emergencies.

After the presentation we will have an informal question/answer period.

Below is a quick outline of our presentation although more topics may be included as we start compiling our lecture.

Household Dangers and Environmental Injuries to include:
- Teflon toxicity PTFE
- Lead/Zinc toxicity
- Nesting materials wrapped around legs particularly in canaries and finches
- Ceiling fan injuries
- Boiling water burns, hot coffee ground burns
- Flying into toilet bowls/mirrors/windows
- Fumes and aerosols
- Cat bite wounds
- Ingesting toxic plants
- Crushing injuries due to slammed doors

Other emergencies:
- Eggbound birds
- Blood feather break
- Seizures
- Dyspneic birds secondary to goiter - keets
- Dyspneic birds due to Psittacosis
- Dyspneic birds due to inhaled seed - cockatiels
- Dyspneic birds due to Aspergillosis - Afr. Greys, Amazons
- Dyspneic birds due to ascites
- Swollen leg due to constriction by band
- Vomiting - FB, neoplasia, pancreatitis
- Diarrhea - Giardia, Candida, Megabacteria (ornithogaster)
- Regurgitation and crop stasis
- Crop burns of baby birds
- Self-mutilation
- Weakness and emaciation - PDD, Neoplasia, Infectious diseases
- Hematuria - Pb
- Fractures
