I am a multi-cultural male who moved to the Nashville area with my wife a few months ago from the west coast. I never lived in the south. So far, I'm not getting the 'southern hospitality" vibe. I am getting a vibe which indicates "transplants" are not welcomed here. People are polite enough on the surface; but underneath there is a undercurrent of dislike for "strangers". I'm sure there are some wonderful folks here. It takes a long time to find them.

But for the most part, I feel judged all the time. I've been on four job interviews out of 30 jobs applied in 8 months. Each time, the employer is more concern with where I moved from and why I'm here, than if I can do the job. I mean ANY job. I think my resume gets trashed most of the time when they see I'm from some place else. I have a solid work history, no criminal record, a clean appearence, articulate, polite and a positive additude. These qualities seem to work against me here. This is because I'm not cultrally sterotypical on any level.

It seems more like I am being scrutinized as an invader from another planet attempting to take over than an employee prospect. I've asked other transplants if they get this feeling too. Some have said they have. I've asked some southerners if they feel invaded by transplants. Some answered honestly and others just got mad and told me to get out of the south if I don't like it. :(

I know the history of the south. I know the lack of cultral diversity among the middle class is lacking and the area is very polarized. I know my cultral background plays a part in my constant rejection. Anybody is welcomed to add something "constructive." I already know I can go home; but that is not an option for me right now. :(

Did you seriously just say that while asking why you are being "stereotyped" as an "outsider"???

Anyway...you are in Nashville. I seriously doubt you are being treated as an outsider or anything like that. It is the country music capital of the world which means a LOT of people from the south, north, east, west and every where in between are moving in and out. Im certain the people of the community are quite accustomed to the situation. Maybe YOU are the one with problem.

I could be wrong, but it seems from your post you have some preconceived notions about the South. Could you please define for clarification purposes what you consider a "culturally diverse society"? Why on earth would you ever have moved to such a place? I am sure that you are a very nice person, but honestly, the tone I am getting from your post is one of let's say "snobbery". I hope that you have not intended it to sound this way. If you are interviewing with "airs" as we call them down here, I assure you that is why you have not found a job. Most employers look for prospective employees with a positive team player attitude and from this post, yours seems to be lacking. You cannot expect that someone will hire you when you are looking down on them and their way of life.
My suggestion to you is to learn more about the South old and new. The "Southern culture" is hundreds of years old and runs very deep, going back generations. It has it's goods and bads, but all areas of the country have peculiarities specific to the region and once you learn them you will fit in nicely. I wish you great luck with your search. By the way, why don't you let everyone know what sort of employment you are looking for and maybe some nice southern gentleman or lady will contact you. :)
