I am looking to buy a dog. I want a large breed, protective, and loyal dog. I have two male black labs currently that are very well behaved. One is ten and the other 1 1/2 yrs old. I know the reputation of Rotts is they are great guard dogs, but how are they on loyalty and being family dogs. I've known a few individuals who own Mastiffs, particularly english mastiff's that say they are wonderful family dogs and extremely loyal. Anyone have any advice or opinions? Let me know please.

I'd try looking around your local resuces and shelters first. I know when I was looking to adopt, they had many rotties at the shelters. petfinder.com is an easy way to find all of them in your area.

If you're looking for a large, protective dog (which mastiffs should NOT be trained to be protective), you need to know how to handle them.
Owning a large, protective dog takes a lot more responsible ownership than two labs.
You need to make sure you have muzzles on hand, signs indicating you own an aggressive dog, very sturdy crates for when company comes over, etc. You, as an owner of an aggressive dog, are completely liable for what the dog may do to someone. You are responsible not only for the dog's safety, but the safety of the public.
Owning a known aggressive dog also requires very expensive insurance.

x2.

Go to petfinder.com and search for "extra large" dogs.
