Does anyone know how to disable the 'ink monitor' on an Epsom printer. My printer keeps telling me that there is no ink in the cartridges when I know damn well that there is. I only changed the cartridges last week and haven't printed more than one or two pages of black text but it's saying that the yellow and magenta cartridges are empty. Unfortunately, once it gives the message that a cartridge is empty, it refuses to print.....even if it says that a colour cartridge is empty and I only want black. I have shaken the cartridges and they all seem full.
Any ideas??

Our Brother did this...and I'd just reload the same cartridges. *shrugs* Worked for a while. But then more eventually went wrong with it. I'd call Epsom...if it were me

Are these refills? or epson's ink. some require a special little tool that resets the ink cartridge...They did this a while back to prevent people from refilling their own or buying another company's that fit. Otherwise...can't help ya...

I just had the same problem. The ink did something to the head and I had to buy a new one.

It seems an awful waste to discard a printer, but you can't argue with the economics of it.

The cartridges that come with a new printer are typically only at 50 percent capacity. However, I still see your point.

To change the 4 ink cartridges in my current printer would cost 59€. The latest model of my printer cost 70€ and you get 4 new ink cartridges with it!! So I get the latest model for just 11€. Where's the sense in that??

However, I still see your point.I think the cartridges in a new printer are 100% full but during the initial installation they have to fill the print heads, which drains 'em down a bit...but either way yes, the first cartridges in a new printer don't last long.

I have noticed the same thing.. The only thing that is pissing me off is I only need the fax and it wont work because of the ink.. You don't need ink to fax. aggravating.

Another money making scam that the bastards have thought up no doubt. I contacted Epson re mine and spoke to one of their "printer technicians" Ha! What a joke. I think I knew more about printers than she did....and I know sod all! It was just like when you call one of those 'call centres'. They have a list of answers to questions in front of them and as long as you ask a question that's on their list you're fine...... but if the question isn't on their list they are stuffed.....arseholes!
Anyway, gave up in the end and bought a new printer.....!

Ehmm... yes I'm sorry to say that, you should go out and buy yourself a 'Brother DCP 135C printer, scanner, copier. The copy and print of this machine is good, the scanner is medium at best, the photo print is average to bad. But the replacement cartidges are going for a song. Not like the epsom. Check it out, I bought two complete refills for under 30euro.

I bought another Epson (yeah I know...I'm a friggin' idiot) but the cartridges for it a quite cheap at 9€ each. Thanks for the advice anyway...I'll remember for when this new Epson claps out..... next week!

9euro per cartridge, thats not bad at all, what model is it, are they new? Not a bad deal there really. It's when the ink costs more than the printer when it is a waste of money. I think you did alright there really.

It's an Epson DX7400 and it cost me 70€ new. The cartridges do seem a lot smaller than the ones on the old printer though....probably why they are only 9€...half the ink of the old ones.

Sounds ok-ish. I'd still recommend the Brother DCP for future ref though. It has 4 seperate cartridges so when one colour runs out you simply replace it rather than dumping a cartridge with has ink still left in it.
It is a joke really that some printers cost more to refill than they cost to buy, that should be an issue really. Might as well call them disposable expensive printers.

Have looked lately...and HP has had the best bang for the buck in cartridges. Our old brothers cost somewhere in the $20s to change...and last no longer than most HPs do for less than 1/2 the price...

Hmmm, interesting, I have an HP rotting away in a corner somewhere, the printer cost 70euro (half price deal), great quality and a good printer but it costs about the same (70euro) to refill it with new cartridges. So it is basically scrap.
My 'Brother' has two complete refills on standby bought from ebay for 20euro, thats 8 cartridges, 2 of each colour. I feel that the running costs for this printer is very good so far. The original refills that came with the printer are lasting well, I print a lot, and friends use it as well when they are stuck.
But fair enough if you have found a good model printer by HP that does just as well or even better it would be worth putting up the model and make here.
Plus, question, does it have two cartridges i.e. 57 and 58 or does it have 4 seperate cartridges?

Dunno....we looked at several models the other day. Guess it all depends on what you use it for. Basic home...work related stuff and kids....THEY run the color out otherwise I'd go with b/w laser. In the past...the HP we had wasn't as costly as the brother carts....older and one cart to do all (on the hp)
Only commenting that brother (recently looking at only a couple of stores) carts are harder to find as well as being significantly higher in price compared to MOST HP carts which were everywhere.
We're undecided...just know we have to get something soon as our Bro has finally bit the dust. Thinking of buying a laser for most and getting a decent but not off the wall color for the kids.... :)

If it for home use then I'd recommend the Brother DCP-135C, my printer is a printer scanner copier and it is doing the biz for me, I use it for home and project work which is used by friends and nephews who have project work as well.
The stores here stock cartridges for the Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow at 10euro a pop. The K (Black) is more expensive at 18euro but you can get all these cartridges shipped as a package on ebay for about 15euro for a complete refill.
Not sure about the laser printers, If they work out cheaper and with good quality then go for it. I think that when buying a printer though the running cost is the main issue that should be looked at. Good Luck with your purchase.
