If you abused your dog? It really depends.
How much? How long?
It could very well be detrimental...
But it may not be. It all depends.

I'm going to say probably not... it may take the pup a while to get back to normal, but nothing permanent.
May I ask why you're asking?

By the sounds of these questions I think you should go to the library and get a book like puppies for dummies. (no disrespect) It will answer all your basic questions.

Wow, no offense, but it seems like you have a lot of learning to do!
Those are a lot of questions, and I could write a whole book on that, but I'll be honest... I don't have time and my writing is horrible to say the least.
Here's a site that will help you out; http://www.dogtraininghq.com/puppy/
I suggest you join a puppy socialization class. 3-6 months is the age where socializing can either make or break your dog. If you want a well-rounded dog, I suggest puppy classes with a local trainer or participating Petco/Petsmart.
Also, regarding your children; you need to teach them how to act around dogs. Remind your children to be gentle, give the dog their space, and respect the dog. Having your children hit the puppy is not teaching either party anything. The dog will learn to grow intolerant of children and the children will learn to go to random dogs and act innapropriately.
Good luck with your puppy. What breed is he/she?

It sounds like you're a first-time puppy owner (and maybe not too much experience with dogs?).
I probably wouldn't recommend a pit bull-type dog. They're very energetic, they can be aggressive towards other dogs, and they're too intelligent for their own good! They require a LOT of work, otherwise, they're awesome dogs.
If you're really set on a pit bull, though, I would really recommend you join pitbullforum.com.
I would recommend a low-key dog. No matter what, puppies are SO much work. They require SO much training and time. They're full of energy... especially when they hit about 10 months. Then they just go crazy.
Anyway, a GREAT resource to find your next dog is petfinder.com.
I'm going to say this with all my heart; ADOPT, ADOPT, ADOPT. Millions of pets are killed each year in shelters... buying a pet-quality dog from a breeder that doesn't show their dogs, doesn't work their dogs, doesn't health test their dogs, and doesn't title their dogs, is NOT a breeder you want to buy from. Responsible breeders are hard to come by, so instead of helping keep puppy mills and backyard breeders in business, please adopt.

The internet is a great resource, I hope you use it to it's full extent. Please feel free to ask anymore questions... it's really responsible for you to be asking before getting your puppy.

"A puppy can learn to do tricks and follow commands when it is as young as 8 weeks of age."
According to the internet.

True. It disagrees with itself too often.
