Hell...I've done that many times with 310, 421 and even the T/Commander. Necessary sometimes when you have to work by yourself. :D
Did you paint it yourself? There's something really sexy about an old girl like that looking SO GOOD.:)
>>Flyboy<<

No - I'm just assembling it. The now defunct "New Taylorcraft" did the restoration. Some things were done well, others were done half assed but they definitely overcharged the owner for what they did.

I'm no expert, but I don't think she's gonna fly. Shouldn't an airplane have wings?!?
:D
Seriously, looks really nice. My wife's cousin has an old Taylorcraft taildragger, and I know how much he loves it.

So Fly, do you actually fly that Penguin thing?
And I thought Evil Kanevil was a dare devil. ;)
I still remember living in Hawaii and my dad taking me up in a Cesna. Scare the living crap out of me when all I could see was the blue ocean. I was 7 or 8 at the time.

Have you seen the Turbo installation in the TC? Talk about a bag of snakes.
Yours has been sitting so long...I'm curious as to the condition of the hydraulics. Also... I used to have a NLG downlock pressure guage somewhere. I'll try to find it this week.
I've got some tire valve cores at the hanger too if you need one for the Duc.

Orion
09-05-2008, 05:51 PM
Thank you! Yes please, I'd love a drink - could you please fly over to the nearest Canadian city and bring me some original Bloody Caesar? And while you're at it, pick up some Blue for Fly and max. Thank you kindly, sir!:D In return, I'll take care of Guinness for you!
Bloody Caesar...will I need special medical equipment for this poor Caesar fellow. What happened to him? How did he get bloody. Was he attacked by some Brutus?
Orion
09-05-2008, 06:45 PM
Bloody Caesar is a cocktail (is that a cock with a tail?!?!?!? Ahhh , the idiosyncrasies of the English language that make no sense) ... anyway, where was I (ADD)? - It was created by a Canadian cocktail chef for a world competition, and it won. This was many years ago and since then Caesar has become a favourite of millions, including yours truly! :)
Look, Lady...Our drink list is right there on the wall. If you don't see what you want there...get over it. I'll be damned if I'm flying all the way to Hoserland just to get you some cockamaimy cocktail that you probably won't finish anyway. Just who the hell do you think you are anyway? Some world famous concert Pianist that teaches at a world renown university like ASU or something?

BTW - have you looked at airplane prices lately? Full IFR low time mid 70s 182s selling for under 60K. Just last year the same plane was going for 75 or 80K. I saw a Dakota going for 35K, again full panel, mid-time TBO, etc.
But yet light sport stuff is slowing going up in value. I think this Cub I'm building will actually get over 30K once I get it completed.
The market for twins has tanked and some singles are not far behind. A lot of it has to do with ADs coming up or due. Eng & Airframe time vs ADs. Some ADs are projected to cost more than the worth of the bird or close.
There is a difference between what you and I remember as "full IFR" and today's panels. I've had people tell me they can't generate buying interest unless the bird has a glass panel. That tells you who today's airplane buyers are.
If the Dakota's Lycoming has a hollow crank...there's your answer. Lots of hidden pitfalls in the acft market. Believe it or not, the only sector of the market that is holding it's own is turbine. VLJs are having a rough time getting a foothold unless they have the backing of long established manufacturers but Biz jets are still going strong. The econ downturn may negate that...too early to tell.
A potential buyer with the ability to do his own maintenance and some cash burning a hole in his pocket, could nail down a real good buy if he kept a close eye on the market. Know anyone like that, Fly?? Trade a Plane is like watching a stock ticker.

Fly...Your Cub should net more than 30K...way more...with fresh engine, paint and interior, It could go as high as 50 to 60K if you can find the right buyer. Nostalgia is one of the only top selling points left. It looks real good in the pics and I'm sure you've been meticulous in assembly. That one's a keeper.

Its been a bit tough though - the pukes who covered it did a mediocre job - some of the tape seams are wrong and there's a lot of little issues with the interior - nothing there that can't be fixed in time.

Agree about Trade a Plane.
I didn't see if the Dakota had a hollow crank - I actually know how to do the mag particle inspection, did one a few years ago.
I'm kind of sitting and waiting - when I'm done with the cub I'd love to get into another project, something closer to home (the cub is a considerable distance from my home).
I have some cash but don't want to tap out my savings, especially in these times and i don't want to finance my recreation. I'm hoping to stumble into a project or a wreck I could get somewhat cheap and salvage, again wishful thinking.

Just in the pattern - made it real long, almost 15 minutes, the landing sucked!
For all of you non-pilots out there - that is still a good landing.
A good landing is any you can walk away from... a great landing is one where you can use the plane again.
But "grease" IS the word.:D

Don't worry about the landing. She has forgotten a lot in the last 30 years. It'll come back to her quickly. :D

But you still have to watch out for those pesky runways that have a habit of moving out from under you at the last minute...I hate it when that happens. :D
Try landing on a runway full of potholes like the one at Whiskey Creek in Silver City, NM. Dodge and weave...

She was as stable as a rock. Set the trim in neutral and moved it maybe once during the flight. I did and extensive preflight and when I did the weight and balance both plane an I had a ramp weight of 1006 pounds!
The landing - did flare high because at the last minute I changed my mind like a bone head and thought I could pull out a 3 point landing after the first bounce I knew immediately what I did - by that time the plane veered right - I resisted the urge to slam left rudder so I just let her roll and slowly imputed left rudder while shoving the stick in my belly and eventually made my way back on the runway. The lady who owned the plane was freaking out but was glad to see all was well.
When I got back to the hangar she was in tears (maybe because of my landing:rolleyes:). I think the last time the plane flew was 1978.

I still have to do another interview and drive down to meet them. If I get it, I'm only getting -9 to start, but the -11 that will be above me is retiring in 19 months and I will replace him. Then I will have to fight and file just like the rest of 'em for ups. Either way...I will make more money in a place that is about 60-70% of the cost of living compared to this shit hole I'm in now.

What goes up must also come down. Sometimes, the latter happens with extreme prejudice. If the cause was mechanical or structural and not human error, lessons will be learned from the mishap. The cause will be corrected and future losses will be avoided. That's why they call it "Flight Testing". Every test pilot knows the odds and his training and skills are the only weapons he has to combat catastrophe...jus' sayin'.

Actually I invested in a snow blower a few years ago. It still took me about an hour to totally clear my driveway and back deck. We got about 18 inches where I'm at, a lot of drifts, but by noon yesterday, a lot of it melted away.
Today the streets are cleared and dry, and the snow is melting away!
