My Mini Rex just had a litter and I bought the her and the babies in out of the cold. She had them a week ago and two days ago she stopped feeding them, I sat her back out side and kept the babies in the house. The runt in the litter would get out of the hutch and wander around so, I let her do this and was hand feeding her. She seemed to be doing fine. I was out all day yesterday and when I got in my daughter told me she died:( and she would have lived if I had been home (whole different story). Now I am wondering if I did the right thing by seperating her from the mommy. I have a New Zeland White that is due to drop a litter any day and I am terrified......

Any one else who has experience in caring for baby rabbits and what to do when the mother stops feeding them?

Sorry to hear about your loss, you will not be able to foster the kid's out to the New Zealand, are you for sure she quit feeding them since she only feeds them once a day and usually it is at night, I would put vick's vapor rub on her nose and put her babies back out with her, most likely what happened to the runt was some of the fluid got into her lungs it happens so don't beat yourself up over it just make sure you have plenty of hay in with them so they can make a borrow to have them in any other questions you might have please ask.

I did the hay and the extra hair she pulled out for the nest. I will try the vapor rub and bring her back in. How long should I expect the mother to nurse? Thanks

It does not take them long to nurse, if you are finding the young outside of the box then what is happening is the kid's are clinging on to her tit and you will have to put them back into the box make sure you use a glove when handling them at this age.

Oh, ok...before I brought them inside there were 3 that I found outside of the hutch. That was the reason I put them in the house. I didn't wear gloves I just reacted on instinct to get them off the cold ground:eek::o
I did bring the mom back in and put her with the babes. The rest are fine and eating lettuce and carrots.

Darn, I need to get some vapor rub...........
