Buiding web sites must not be to complicated since everyone has one. How do I go about learning. Are there some easy books out there? What is the best way to learn for someone that has limited computer experience? Thanks

Everyone has a business card too, doesn't mean they or the business is worth a crap!
There's crap and there's professional - there's Chevy and there's BMW, BIG difference You want to just drive like the rest or look the best? It depended on your perspective. Any one can slap together a HTML or PHP page with a few pictures (buy the program and learn), takes a real pro to build a REAL web site.

If you got limited computer experience, get more before learning how to produce anything with it first. We got enough amateurs screwing things up already!

A good example is this site right here. It's php but will take you some time to fully understand.
If all you're looking to build is a "My Webpage" site- go to Yahoo Geocities or Bravehost. They're free and you can build one in a flash. If you want to really learn webpages, go to your favorite bookstore and browse XHTML with CSS for beginners. Don't bother with HTML 4.0. Most of this language will depreciate in just a few years to come. IE: don't go to VCR school when obviously DVD's are in. You'll just waste your time.
My personal favorite is to learn via CD-rom courses like Lynda.com. It can be costly but well worth having a personal professor right on your computer. There's an XHTML course on there.
Next, you'll want to invest in an editor. I suggest going the distance and getting Dreamweaver. You can get an older version cheaper on eBay and then upgrade when your learning has come along.

This is all if you're really serious about web designing. Trust me, you can build a page with very little for free but it won't go very far.

Hi Hound,
There are couple of webistes where you can start learning website stuff. One such is w3schools.com. I find it very useful. PRogrammingtutorials.com is also good.
Otherwise to get started, you can also try building website using free templates. Do u have tools like frontpage or dreamweaver?

Good luck

Sometimes the best way to learn is to dive in and learn as you do. Web design is a good example of that.

Here is a possible location where you will be able to host your site for only $4.95 per month. Web design software, online photo gallery and more are included as a bonus.

http://www.netfirms.com/web-hosting-plus (http://www.netfirms.com/web-hosting-plus)

As you learn and grow in both interest and talent, you can expand your site as far as you want to go, including a complete e-commerce site.

If it is something you really want to do, then don't listen to those who tell you not to waste your time. If nobody likes your site, then they will not visit. If you like it - who cares what others thing. GOOD LUCK!

NOTE: I realize this borders on an ad, but I have no financial interest in Netfirms and have nothing to gain if you choose to use their services. My customers seem to be very happy with them and they offer a quality product.

If you can spend a few bucks - look into the Hotdog Webmaster Suite (it's been my preference for years!) - I have tried a bunch of HTML editors - some (like Hot Metal) aren't that spectacular.

There are some really good freeware ones - but the time to sift through the junk to fins a good one is a pain and can load your computer down with a ton of stuff that can mess up . . .

Good Luck and remember anything worth doing is worth learning!

Check out your local bookstore. There are various books on the subject that are very easy to follow from Websites for Dummies to complicated programming style books. Every person has a different learning style so review a few books and pick the one that works best.

There are many applications that build a "WYSIWYG" (What you see is what you get). MS Word, MS Frontpage to name a few. There you can type a document the way you want and save it as a webpage and voila your first webpage.

If you do not want to do it yourself. There are many sites that have site builder tools to help you build a site based on predefined themes where you just tell the site how you want your page to look like and type in the content. If it is business site can I suggest www.officelive.com from Microsoft. If it is a personal site, when you search for free webhosting online and pick a webhost you will see almost all of them have basic site themes you can use and just edit.

Hope this helps.

Someone yesterday showed me their site that they used Netscape composer software to build it - they said it was free and easy...
