Two days before Christmas I got a 2 1/2 year old miniature schnauzer from someone on the internet. He was very scared and nervous for a long time, but seems to have settled in nicely now.

He is picking up on his housetraining and walking ont he leash very well now but I have only a couple of issues with him.

This first issue is he hate riding in the car and gets all shivery when we go somewhere. Just seems to have a bad case of nerves, and I cannot even get him into the car unless i place him in it. He will not willingly go in. Is this somethign he may never get used to?

The second issue is that he barks at my older kids (teens on up) that still live at home. They are not at home with him all day like I am, and he barks and growls at them when they come home, and when they come out of their bedrooms and walk around the house. Is this normal for a small dog to do this? He does not nip at anyone or even attempt to do so, but at times this is driving me crazy. He is very attached to me and is by my side at all times.

Pardone the screen name....I have a 1 year old mini, and she is like that with my step-son at times. If he is not around your son and attached to you, he is just telling your son what his boundries are. As long as he doesn't bite it is just annoying. As for the car thing, we also have a standard poodle that got car sick and hated to ride. We just kept taking her on short trips whenever possible and she got over it! Good luck. We love our little schnauzer!

thanks, I was beginning to think that he just hated everyone else in the house.

Jack doesn't get car sick, just shivers and shakes all the time, and the funny thing is when I am getting ready to go somewhere, he is all acting like he wants to go with me until we get to the car and then he just refuses to get in it, and if I do take him, he can't wait to get home.

I love him a lot, he is great company for me and not demanding of excersise at all. I would love to have another mini but since I am disabled I cannot afford to buy one. Jack was given to me at no cost.

He may jsut need to go for more rides. Ours is very loyal to me and my daughter. I work nights, and she always comes down to greet me when I get home (12:30 or so am).

I have been taking him in the car every chance that I get, and he is doing ok with it, but I hate to leave him in the car when I have to go in somewhere. He seems to be okay with it though and is very wiggly when I return to the car. I try to be as fast as possible so he knows I am coming back.

He has barked and growled at a few people from the car when they get to close to it, so I guess he is figuring that is his too :D . When we are parked somewhere just waiting around in the car he really is doing much better now, and just hates it when the car is running so I guess we are making some progress now.

He is a very fast learner. I am so amazed at how smart he is. I had him housetrained within 2 weeks time.

That's too bad no one tells you. Maybe in your area they are not considered cute. I think she is cute, but I love schnauzers since I have one now.

How old is your pup? Have you had her groomed yet? It is always best to start when they are young otherwise you have a freaked out adult like I do that needs tranquilizer just to get cleaned up. It is terrible. Of course Jack's groomer is the only person that I know that did not think he was a good looking dog or even cute. No matter anyway.

Well Zorra just turned 5 months old a few days ago. No we haven't groomed her yet, but we are looking forward too cause it's getting hot outside and she's black. Long fur would make her suffer during summer!!! I'll send a pic when i get her groomed ok??

Here is a good website for grooming your shcauzer tips.

http://amsc.us/grooming.html

They have charts there too for the typical shcauzer style you can print one for a reference. Hope that helps some lol. Cannot wait to see how it comes out.

I also have a mini and she barks at everyone till they are in the house and she gets to smell them. So what I did I took a old piece of clothes from each of my kids and put it in her bed to sleep with it. Now she has thier smell with her all the time .
And It worked!!!!!
