WTF is the matter with people? You know, normal people wouldn't use guns the way they are being used. We have a death penalty in place in most states but that isn't a deterrent. The laws keep me pretty much in place but there are these people who choose to use their guns in a criminal way knowing what the possible outcome is going to be. Why do they still do it?

Perhaps that is because LaPierre's response was "unhinged". I thought it was a disgrace. His answer is to throw more guns at the problem. But what do you expect when the NRA gets a LOT of $$$ from gun manufacturers. A single armed cop at EVERY school in the USA is his answer? To just a tiny fraction of the gun related homicides in this country???

We'll agree to disagree here. I thought he was to the point and addressed some of the very topics I've covered in the past. Whether we agree with his answer relating to keeping our schools safe at least he is presenting something of substance, although not perfect. My brother and I have volunteered to analyze the schools within our districts to improve security at those facilities. We'll be looking at quite a few things and unfortunately it may very well include school monitors with concealed weapons or the like. Is that going to be the complete solution? No.

Please Steve, many of us are "staunch defenders of the US Constitution". The meaning of the 2nd Amendment (note amendment... I guess the document wasn't perfect) varies widely depending on your viewpoint. You can't drive a car until a certain age, and you have to prove you are competent. You can't drink before a certain age. You can't practice medicine without a license. Yet we hand over weapons designed to kill to just anyone with no restrictions? I don't agree with Plad on "handing over" guns, and that isn't going to happen no matter what. But we can place meaningful and sensible restrictions on owning an instrument of death.

Good points...... We need to ensure that certain people never have the ability to purchase or possess firearms. Being a responsible gun owner also means properly securing/controlling that device.

See my response above. Eloquent??? Respectful??? The parents of these students have spoken out - he spat in their faces. It was an absurd suggestion, very expensive, and only covers the schools when in session. An armed guard or officer will be the first casualty in any similar situation. They won't have a Dirty Harry at every school... more like a Barney Fife. And Barney will be target #1.
The NRA, as usual, skirts any responsibility for our gun crazy society. They are more culpable than any video game.

I disagree.... I think he got to his points and demonstrated great passion and sorrow for the victims and their families in Sandy Hook. I was not aware that there was a video game called "Kindergarten Killers", were you? Where's that conversation? The NRA defends the right to gun ownership with the least amount of hassle. I don't necessary agree with that when it comes to sporting type rifles, or those better known as assualt weapons. There is considerable ignorance in this country as to the differences between a semi-automatic and fully automatic weapon. IMHO an assault weapon is a weapon of war capable of sending multiple projectiles at a target with the single squeeze of a trigger. Just because something looks like a military or full auto weapon doesn't make it one. Found this a few minutes ago on MSN - Bulk of new films focus on guns amid NRA criticism

I wouldn't particularly disagree with you there. Kids certainly weren't so 'disturbed' when I was one. We didn't have all the 'kill 'em all' games and films that we have now so there might be something in it.

IMO the kids of today are bigger "Know it alls" than we were. They are tech savvy which enables them to access data that you and I didn't have access to in our teens, and lets face it, the internet is a plethora of misinformation, fact, conspiracy theories, etc...... I'm not so sure our generation would have done much better with the stimuli that a modern kid is exposed to, but our parents, or at least in my case, were more pro-active and informed about what their kids were up to. I also believe that many of the young people from 12 to 30 are in some way emotionally retarded regarding some areas. Most seem to do better than my generation in relationships, but I think it's too early to make a sound judgment overall.

I read some of this thread but not all. haven't time. But I would be curious what those of you in the "ban guns camp" think we should do. Be specific. Detail what ban you would call for. And tell us what would result from your law.

I don't have time to read 18 pages of mostly rehash. I am seeking what real proposals those who believe in gun control as a solution have. No one in this thread (I believe having scanned briefly) has proposed anything specific.
